Computer-Based Career Information Systems

Career Information Systems: An Overview

The best known computer-based career information systems are the state-based career information delivery systems (CIDS). Serving over 9 million customers yearly at more than 20,000 sites, CIDS operate in 48 states and provide information about occupations and educational programs within that state (Mariani 1995-96; National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee 1996). Although CIDS have been developed by a number of different vendors and customized for particular audiences, they share the following core features (ibid.):

Assessment. Most CIDS now have one or more online tools that help users assess their values, interests, skills, aptitudes, or experiences as well as the characteristics they expect from a job. These assessments help users learn about themselves and the qualities they might prefer in a career. Reading through editorials, magazines and numerous articles it became progressively clear that a potent majority of business leaders took off early in their careers and with a marked level of focal point. After completing graduation in electronics engineering, I accepted the chance to act with an IT consulting firm delivering a worldwide presence. As a consultant at an early stage I was given the responsibility to develop a product for a Dutch client in the banking sector. The responsibility, enhanced my skills of handling complex issues and being a team-player. It helped me understand the entire life-cycle of technology product development and gave an opportunity to interact with global clients. After 3 years, another opportunity made me work with a leading US investment bank. Here I developed an inclination towards big databases and designing techniques used to store financial data. It also gave me an exposure to learn different financial products and hone managerial skills. I got the recognition, in the entire line of business for optimising long running processes for generating financial reports.

Ace of the incidents which made me realise to master managerial skills happened last November.
